In the spring of 2009, the Minnesota legislature made not wearing a seat belt while operating a motor vehicle a “primary” offense. This changed the law to allow State Patrol and local police to initiate a traffic stop if a driver or passenger of a vehicle was not properly wearing a seat belt. Since this change in the legislative landscape, Minnesota has seen a steady increase in the percentage of drivers and passengers using seat belts.
In order to further this trend, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (MNDPS) has recently launched an extensive advertising campaign about the dangers of not wearing a seat belt. It is no surprise that this campaign comes at the same time of the National Organization for Youth Safety‘s annual Global Youth Traffic Safety Month. The most recent television commercial by MNDPS, which can be viewed below, provides a rather startling demonstration about the forces involved in car accidents when seat belts are not in use.
